How to use these dashboards

  • Current visualizations include data from 2020-2023; MDH will incorporate additional years as new data becomes available.
  • Due to the large volume of data displayed, users may need to scroll vertically or horizontally to view the complete information on each dashboard.
  • MDH encourages users to review data specifications in the Vital Statistics Interactive Query: User Guide (PDF), which contains additional data context.
  • Contact the MDH Center for Health Statistics for help and assistance with the dashboards.

Natality data

Explore birth data trends by selecting various categories, such as low birth weight, maternal BMI, education level, and age group. Use these filters to explore patterns and gain insights into key factors affecting birth outcomes.

Counts fewer than 10 are represented by an asterisk (*) symbol.

Natality data table

This cross-tabulation of various categories, including race/ethnicity, marital status, attendant type, and low birth weight, allows you to compare and analyze the data across different dimensions. Explore statistical data by selecting one or more counties and years to compare trends.

Counts fewer than 10 are represented by an asterisk (*) symbol.

Crude birth rates

Explore crude birth rates comparing statistics across selected categories. Data for missing or unknown counties is excluded from this visualization. The crude birth rate is the number of live births in a given population over a specified period of time, usually per 1,000 people. It provides a general measure of birth frequency in a population but does not account for the age or sex distribution of the population.

Crude fertility rates

Compare fertility rates by selecting specific counties or "All" counties, "State of Minnesota" for statewide data. Data for missing or unknown counties is excluded from the dashboard. The fertility rate typically refers to the total fertility rate, which estimates the average number of children a woman would have over her lifetime, based on current age-specific fertility rates. Unlike the crude birth rate, the fertility rate considers the age distribution of women who are most likely to have children (typically ages 15-44).
