Diabetes Prevention

Take the prediabetes risk test

One in three American adults has prediabetes. Prediabetes is a serious health condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough yet to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. Find out if you’re at risk for prediabetes today so you can reverse it before it becomes type 2 diabetes.

Take the DoIHavePrediabetes risk test (PodriaTenerPrediabetes in Spanish) to see if you are at risk. Encourage others to take this quick and anonymous test as well.

National Diabetes Prevention Program

Diabetes is preventable. The National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) is a proven lifestyle change program that can help people with prediabetes cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes in half.

A trained lifestyle coach will help you learn new skills, set and meet goals, and create healthy habits that can last a lifetime. You will receive the support you need to make positive changes—like eating healthier, adding physical activity, and managing stress.

The goal of this year-long program is for participants to lose 5-7% of their body weight and gain 150 minutes of weekly physical activity. Program participants meet weekly for 16 weeks over an initial six-month period, and monthly over the next six months.

Learn more about details about the program, time commitment, and eligibility: Diabetes Prevention Program Lifestyle Change Program Details.

The National Diabetes Prevention Program curriculum is based on findings from the Diabetes Prevention Program research study, a randomized controlled trial conducted by the National Institutes of Health. The study showed that people with prediabetes who lost a modest amount of weight — about 15 to 20 pounds for most people — reduced their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58% over a three-year period.

Find a program

Programs that have met high standards with the CDC’s Diabetes Prevention Recognition Program are listed on their Find a Program page, including those offered in Minnesota.

To locate an in-person program near you, enter your zip code and a desired travel radius. If you prefer a distance learning, online, or combination experience, you may search for those options as well. Please contact the organization(s) directly for the most up-to-date class locations and information.

These programs have classes held throughout Minnesota:

  • Juniper – Diabetes Prevention Program. Juniper offers many types of classes, both in-person and online, designed to help you live well, get fit, and prevent falls.
  • University of Minnesota Extension - I CAN Prevent Diabetes. There are classes available across greater Minnesota, including some in other languages. Use this site to find a local SNAP-Ed person to inquire about classes in your area.

Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program

People with Medicare Part B can enroll in the Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program for free. Learn more and find out if you are eligible: How Medicare Can Help You Prevent Type 2 Diabetes.
