Vaccines are an important public health intervention that prevent disease and protect both the person and the community by stopping or slowing the spread of disease. This page provides influenza and COVID-19 vaccination data for Minnesota residents by select demographics for the current respiratory season.

  • Minnesota uses the following definitions for influenza and COVID-19 vaccine data:
    • People up to date on influenza vaccinations: Number of people in Minnesota who have received at least one dose of influenza vaccine this season (start date 7/1/2024).
    • People up to date on COVID-19 vaccinations: Number of people in Minnesota who have received the recommended doses of COVID-19 vaccine they are eligible to receive. For ages 6 months through 4 years, up to date means at least 2 doses of a COVID-19 product, one of which must be a 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine. For ages 5+, up to date means one dose of a 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine (start date 8/23/2024).
    • People up to date: Number of people in Minnesota who are up to date with influenza and COVID-19 vaccine doses.
  • All data are subject to change as more information is received.

  • Immunization data are updated with data as of 12 a.m. on the Sunday prior.
  • Unless otherwise noted, all denominators are based on the 2023 US Census Bureau County Population by Characteristics estimates for the state of Minnesota, available at United States Census Bureau: Explore Census Data.
    • All data by county is based on residence.
  • Immunization data are based on vaccination records in the  Minnesota Immunization Information Connection (MIIC), a confidential immunization information system. Immunizations in MIIC are submitted by participating health care providers.
  • Providers that participate in MIIC are encouraged to submit complete and accurate information to MIIC within one week of acquiring the information.
  • MIIC is a useful resource to monitor state and county immunization coverage in Minnesota. The data can also help to identify at-risk populations and encourage public health actions and policies aimed at increasing immunization. The data cannot tell us why people are not vaccinated.
  • However, MIIC data may underestimate the actual number of people receiving vaccines due to several limitations:
    • While most providers routinely submit vaccine administration data to MIIC, some data may not be submitted to MIIC properly or there could be errors in the data that result in missing immunization information. MDH staff monitor and address any lapses in data exchange to ensure that timely and accurate vaccination information is submitted.
    • Cross border-state immunization data exchange currently occurs with Iowa, Wisconsin, and North Dakota. Vaccines received in Iowa, Wisconsin, and North Dakota when the person gave a Minnesota address are in MIIC. At this time there is no similar data exchange with South Dakota.
    • Age is calculated based on the date of birth provided at the time of vaccination.
  • Due to missing/unknown values and small cell values, totals may not add up across dashboards.
  • Due to data collection and reporting timing, there may be discrepancies between data from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and other sources.
