Health equity at work: Skills assessment of public health staff

National Association of Chronic Disease Directors

Health equity at work: Skills assessment of public health staff (PDF) shares recommendations and survey questions from a nationwide pilot survey to build workforce capacity to address health equity.

The National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) Health Equity Council designed a survey to determine the skills public health staff need to advance health equity. The survey was based on public health competencies, informed by key informant interviews, and guided by suggestions from national health equity experts. You can find the survey questions in Appendix F: Sample survey (p. 27).

When to use

You could use the sample survey as is, or adapt it with employee input to assess internal capacity to advance health equity.

Your organization may want to use some of the key informant questions (1, 2, 3, 6, 7, or 8) at a staff meeting, to discuss skills present and skills needed to be effective in advancing health equity.

You may find the report's broader recommendations useful in creating a workforce development plan, training plan, or individual development plan(s), to prepare staff for advancing health equity initiatives.
