Autism Spectrum Disorder Reports
- 2023 CDC Community Report on Autism
The 2023 Community Report on Autism includes information on the number of children with Autism from 11 different areas in the United States. The information comes from the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network, or ADDM (pronounced like the name “Adam”), which studies the number of four-year-old and eight-year-old children with autism. One in every 36 children who were eight-years old were identified with autism. For every one girl identified with autism, four boys were identified. More Black, Hispanic, and Asian or Pacific Islander children were identified with autism than White children. A Qualitative Study of Families of Children with Autism in the Somali Community: Comparing the Experiences of Immigrant Groups (PDF)
Executive Summaries:In 2012, the Minnesota Legislature authorized a study intended to help understand "cultural- and resource-based aspects of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) that are unique to the Somali community." The study was extended to also include the Hmong and Latino communities. The study was conducted by researchers from: the University of Minnesota, School of Public Health; the Somali, Latino, and Hmong Partnership for Health and Wellness (SoLaHmo), West Side Community Health Services; and the Confederation of Somali Community in Minnesota (CSCM). - Options for Public Health Surveillance for Autism Spectrum Disorder (PDF)
In 2012, the Minnesota Legislature directed that the "Commissioner of Health develop and submit a report...on the feasibility of establishing a public health surveillance system for ASD." The Minnesota Department of Health released this report to summarize options for and outline the work needed to develop a public health surveillance system for ASD in Minnesota. A public health surveillance system for ASD in Minnesota would allow the state to assess the occurrence of ASD in the population and provide data to inform an evidence-based public health response. March 2014 - University of Minnesota Minneapolis Somali Autism Spectrum Disorder Prevalence Project
"The University of Minnesota estimates autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in Somali and non-Somali children in Minneapolis."
Largest project to date looks at the number and characteristics of Somali children with ASD in any U.S. community.
New data released in December 2013 by the University of Minnesota reports that Somali and White children were about equally likely to be identified with ASD in Minneapolis. There is no statistically meaningful difference between the two estimates. Somali and White children were more likely to be identified with ASD than non-Somali Black and Hispanic children.
