SagePlus participants dance towards health

SagePlus partnered with CM Fitness and Dance in Richfield, Minnesota to teach Zumba® a Latin-inspired, group, dance, and fitness workout to SagePlus participants. Classes were offered daily to SagePlus participants to choose when they could participate.

Zumba has high and low energy components through dance choreography and is a great way to get the heart rate up. It has been shown to burn 300-1,000 calories per session leading to a sustainable method of weight loss with consistent participation.

As part of the SagePlus program, participants were expected to complete 10-15 Zumba sessions combined with meeting with a health coach. Patients attended Zumba twice a week to start building a consistent workout routine. Lastly, patients participated in a follow-up screening completed around four to six weeks after the end of the Zumba classes, where they measured their height, weight, and blood pressure and completed a health and lifestyle questionnaire.

The Zumba classes quickly became a favorite and popular choice of exercise for SagePlus participants, who were able to join with no prior dance experience. The choreography was easy to dance to and because the classes were easy for people with various lifestyles, abilities, and health risks, participants felt like they could jump right in and have fun.

The SagePlus program uses a cultural lens and incorporates health coaching to improve engagement and help participants complete the program. The program also helps connect patients to resources that can reduce barriers to health.
