Child and Teen Checkups Training Descriptions and Registration
Child and Teen Checkups (C&TC) provides training throughout the state to primary care providers, clinic staff, local public health, Head Start, schools and those screening children, adolescents, and young adults in Minnesota.
To request a C&TC training for your staff/organization, please submit a C&TC Training Request.
If you don't already have an account, here are instructions for creating an account on the MDH Learning Center. Each person must have their own individual account in the system (no generic or group accounts are allowed). Standard webinar training descriptions
Session 1: Includes an overview of Early Periodic Screening Diagnosis and Treatment (EPSDT) and C&TC, health equity, special populations, anticipatory guidance, measurements, health history, and early childhood (0-5 years) developmental and social-emotional health.
Session 2: Includes an overview of older child and youth mental health, tobacco, alcohol, or drug use risk assessment, physical exam, immunizations, lab tests, STI risk assessments, hearing and vision screening, oral health, and adolescent and young adult health.
Intended for: Those who provide and assist in providing C&TC screening (providers, nurses, MAs, Head Start, Trained support staff or aides, C&TC or Maternal and Child Health coordinators and outreach workers, Clinic and Public Health admins, and Health Plan Representatives).
Register for Best Practices in Well Child Screening - $60/person
Session 1: Includes a review of current recommended and required C&TC screening procedures for infants and children 0-10 years of age including measurements, labs including pediatric tuberculosis risk assessment, developmental and social-emotional screening, and referral and resources.
Session 2: Includes a review of current recommended and required C&TC screening procedures for adolescents including adolescent questionnaires and toolkits, STIs and HIV, special populations with a focus on justice involved youth, mental health, and substance use
Intended for: PHNs who currently provide C&TC screening services and have attended a C&TC Comprehensive (3-day) Training in the past but have not attended a C&TC Comprehensive or Refresher training in the last 2 – 5 years.
Hearing Basic: Includes an introduction to screening, background, basic anatomy, hearing screening measurements and definitions, audiometer care and use, preparation and performing evidence-based pure tone screening and play audiometry procedures including environmental noise level check, pass/refer/rescreen criteria, and documentation.
Vision Basic: Includes an introduction to screening, background, external anatomy, visual pathways, visual conditions to look for during vision screening, performing evidence-based vision screening procedures including the use of recommended visual acuity charts, plus lens screening, pass/refer/rescreen criteria, and documentation.
Intended for: Anyone who performs hearing and vision screening on children. Medical assistants, school health assistants, volunteers, and other non-nurses who perform vision and hearing screening for children in Head Start, Early Childhood Screening, schools, clinics, and other community settings. May also be sufficient for clinic nurses who provide only basic hearing and vision screenings in the clinic setting.
Hearing and Vision Advanced Screening Skills for Nurses will build off information gained in the Hearing Basic and Vision Basic Screening training.
Information on in-depth ear anatomy and physiology, risk assessment/hearing history, definitions of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss, otoscopy including a review of normal/abnormal findings, tympanometry, otoacoustic emissions screening (OAE), referral tracking, and monitoring considerations.
Review of myopia, hyperopia, and amblyopia definitions and specific procedures that can identify each condition. Information is provided on risk assessment and history taking and performing pupillary light and red reflex procedures.
Intended for: RNs/LSNs/PHNs who perform hearing and vision screening at Early Childhood Screening, Head Start, schools and public health settings.
Standard In-Person Training Descriptions
Basic components include an overview of evidence-based recommendations for performing recommended and required components of a complete C&TC well child exam. Information is provided on specific screening procedures, considerations and strategies for providing appropriate adolescent care, referral, and follow-up, and health equity.
Intended for: Those who provide and assist in providing C&TC screening (providers, nurses, MAs, Head Start, trained support staff or aides, C&TC or Maternal and Child Health coordinators and outreach workers, clinic and public health admins, and health plan representatives).
Basic components include an introduction to the C&TC screening exam, standard screening components, a systematic review of a physical exam, range of normal findings, common problems that may be encountered, and referral criteria. Also included is a practicum of participant demos with child models, preparation homework, practicing with a mentor in their practice setting, and on-site clinical consultation.
Intended for: RNs and PHNs who plan to actively provide C&TC screenings w/in 3 - 6 months and have NOT been trained, and work in a practice setting that qualifies them to be an eligible provider to bill for C&TC screening exams. Refer to the MHCP Provider Manual C&TC section, eligible provider criteria for more information.
Full Rate is intended for registrants covered by C&TC Administrative Services Contract Funds (e.g. County or Tribal Public Health Nurses).
Reduced Rate is intended for registrants from tribal health, Head Start, or school based clinics that do not receive C&TC Administrative Funding.
Basic components include a review of current recommended and required C&TC screening procedures. This training also provides updated information and skills needed to provide C&TC services consistent with program standards.
Intended for: PHNs who currently provide C&TC screening services and have attended a C&TC Comprehensive (3-day) Training in the past but have not attended a C&TC Comprehensive or Refresher training in the last 2-5 years.

Custom Training Descriptions
Custom C&TC Trainings are intended only for those who provide and bill for complete C&TC screening exams: Clinics, Local Public Health, Tribes, and some Head Start programs.
Basic components of this training include:
A description of C&TC, populations requiring special considerations, and information and data about who justice involved youth (JIY) are.
An overview of challenges faced by JIY in accessing preventive health care as well a description and data regarding the barriers they face accessing care.
Data and information on specific health conditions found to have an increased prevalence in the JIY population and recommendations and resources for assisting these youth in accessing care.
Intended for: Staff and providers of community and public programs that provide services to high-risk youth and young adults, including C&TC providers, public health, health clinics, educational settings, county-based juvenile detention, and diversion/probation staff.
Training includes how to incorporate a Minnesota State High School League sports physical into a routine health supervision visit for youth 11 -20 years who are eligible for Child and Teen Checkups. Information includes what needs to be added to the sports physical to make it a complete Child and Teen Checkup
