Naloxone Administration in School Settings Toolkit
Recovery Resources and Referral

Go to: School Toolkit

The final component of the Naloxone Toolkit for Schools includes information and available resources for substance use recovery and referrals. When utilizing the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model, to formulate a comprehensive approach to opioid overdose, we must consider the recovery aspect of substance use and abuse. Health Services, Counseling, Psychological, and Social Services may be utilized to identify available community resources or hotlines for immediate and future referrals to support student safety and recovery.

Schools may help facilitate care coordination if a student seeks treatment and recovery help. Some of the care coordination may involve debriefing with the student after an opioid overdose event and remaining connected during the recovery period to prepare for the transition back to school. Whether a student is out of school short-term recovering from an event or a longer period for treatment, developing a plan for transitioning back to school both for physical safety and social-emotional is important.

Schools may already or want to identify local resources in advance. This may include how to make referrals locally and to whom. Schools may decide to have these resources readily printed and available for staff members, students, and families.

Considerations include:

  • Immediate medical support (addressed in previous sections of this toolkit)
  • Social-emotional support
  • Addiction treatment support
  • Continuing support in the form of school evaluation –health and mental health
