Video Transcript:

As we noted earlier, Integrated Pest Management guidelines recommend the non-pesticide action steps we just reviewed be tried first, before using any chemicals in the home.

But if the pest infestation continues, and chemical interventions become necessary, you should recommend the family:

  • try poison baits, boric acid or traps first, and
  • avoid using sprays or foggers

If a pesticide must be applied as a spray or fog, then recommend:

  • sprays should be used sparingly
  • instructions should be followed
  • there should be plenty of fresh air when the spray is being applied, and
  • if possible, the person with asthma should be out of the room when a spray is used.

The Resource Section has more information on steps a family can take to minimize exposure to pests.
