High Consequence Infectious Disease (HCID) Toolbox for Frontline Health Care Facilities

Purpose of toolbox
- Provides ready-to-use editable tools for frontline facilities to prepare and respond to patients who may have a high consequence infectious disease (HCID).
- Helps facilities meet CMS emergency preparedness regulatory requirements for training and testing programs.
- Helps facilities develop a multi-year plan for HCID education and exercises.
- Incorporates standard infection prevention concepts into training and exercises.
How to use the toolbox
- Use sample multi-year planning, training and exercise plan templates to lay out preparedness activities over multiple years.
- Incorporate readymade slides and personal protective equipment (PPE) videos into facility infection prevention and emergency preparedness training.
- Use or modify sample exercises (seminar, workshop, table top, mini-exercise, game) and templates (Planning Tool, After Action Report).
- Use components to make a binder for staff to use at point of care.

The HCID Toolbox was originally published in June 2018. September 2019 updates to note include:
- Using a standard surgical face mask in the Level 1 Full Barrier Isolation category when evaluating persons under investigation (PUIs) for viral hemorrhagic fever (VHF) who are clinically stable and do not have bleeding, vomiting, or diarrhea
- Using 2 pairs of gloves instead of 3 for a patient with VHF in both Level 1 and Level 2 Full Barrier Isolation categories
- Adding new Readiness Binder materials (e.g., new donning and doffing materials for Level 1 and Level 2 Full Barrier Isolation, waste management and cleaning recommendations, PPE size and brand chart)
