General Mills/Henkel Corp. Superfund Site

The General Mills/Henkel Corporation Superfund site is a former solvent disposal area at 2010 E. Hennepin Avenue in Minneapolis. A vapor intrusion investigation was conducted from 2013-2015 and nearly 200 properties received vapor mitigation systems to prevent exposure to trichloroethylene (TCE) at levels of health concern in indoor air.

MDH has completed an independent evaluation of the site data and actions taken to protect public health. The evaluation, called a Health Consultation, was completed in collaboration with the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. The Health Consultation provides recommendations to protect public health moving forward.

Printable Information Sheet
General Mills/Henkel Corp. Superfund Site (PDF)

Information in the Health Consultation

  • History of the site and investigations
  • Evaluation of site data
  • Information on trichloroethylene (TCE) exposures and health
  • Response to community concerns
  • Recommendations to ensure health is protected

MDH Conclusions

  • Contaminants in soil vapor are not currently harming health in the majority of properties within the investigation area. Contaminants in untested or unmitigated homes may be harming people's health.
  • MDH cannot determine whether TCE exposures from soil vapor in the past may have affected health.
  • Vapor intrusion is the only way people may be exposed to contaminants from this site.

MDH recommendations for further actions at the site

  • Ongoing monitoring of the soil vapor plume
  • Sampling of untested homes, and mitigation if needed
  • Sampling or mitigation for unmitigated properties that have sub-slab results above the action levels
  • Consideration of indoor air testing for properties that were mitigated
  • Implementation of an operation and maintenance plan for vapor mitigation systems
