About the MDH IRB
Institutional Review Board at the Minnesota Department of Health
To protect the privacy, well-being, and rights of Minnesotans who are subjects of research, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) established an institutional review board (IRB) in 2000. This board, which operates under Title 45, part 46 of the Code of Federal Regulations and applicable state law (e.g., Minnesota Government Data Practices Act), reviews and approves department-sponsored human subjects research using its prescribed process.
MDH created this board as the initial part of a long-range plan for addressing issues related to human subjects, including properly protecting data (i.e., information and biospecimens) gathered by the department. The IRB revises its policies and procedures as it continues its work to ensure consistency between state and federal protections, especially privacy protections, for human research subjects.
The Minnesota Department of Health IRB is registered with the federal Office of Human Research Protection. Our registration number is 00000945, and our federal-wide assurance number is 00000072.
