HEDA differences step

HEALTH OUTCOMES BY SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH

An essential step (difference step) in a health equity analysis is describing health outcomes by social determinants of health (e.g., diabetes by income).The Minnesota reports and websites below include health outcomes by a social determinant of health. The majority of these outcomes are reported at the state level. Health outcome data by social determinant of health by county or other geographical areas can be obtained through special requests by contacting the Minnesota Center for Health Statistics (healthstats@state.mn.us).

Statewide data from MDH

White paper on paid leave and health (PDF): This report underscores how a lack of access to paid sick and family leave contributes to health disparities.

White paper on income and health (PDF): This report documents the relationship between income and health using Minnesota specific data.

Advancing health equity in Minnesota: Report to the Legislature (PDF): This 2014 report assesses Minnesota’s health disparities and recommends best practices, policies, processes, data strategies, and other steps that will promote health equity for all Minnesotans.

2012 Minnesota infant mortality data book (PDF): This report provides statewide data in infant mortality including infant mortality rates by age of mother, race of mother and birth weight of infant by race/ethnicity of mother.

Minnesota statewide health assessment: This report presents a wide array of indicators and information about statewide influences on health such as poverty, education, employment, social connectedness and environment.

County data

Vital Statistics Interactive Query, Minnesota Department of Health (currently under construction): This vital statistics interactive website allows the user to query county-level birth data by selected social determinants of health including race, ethnicity, education, marital status, county and birthplace of mother. The same website also allows users to query death data by race/ethnicity and county.

Minnesota Health Access Survey, Minnesota Department of Health: This interactive data tool allows user to query state level insurance data by race/ethnicity.

Health inequities in the Twin Cities, Amherst H. Wilder Foundation: This page reports on life expectancy by various social determinants of health including income and geography.

SHAPE surveys, Hennepin County: SHAPE, or Survey of the Health of All the Population and Environment, provides health data by neighborhood or county region and race/ethnicity.
