Medical Lodging
Food, Pools, and Lodging Services (FPLS)

  • Medical Lodging (PDF)
Patients, their families and caregivers sometimes need to find lodging for several weeks or months while receiving treatment or procedures at a nearby hospital or medical center. Medical lodging must meet construction, maintenance and operation standards to help protect the health of all Minnesotans and visitors to our state. This fact sheet will help regulatory staff and lodging establishment owners and operators understand the requirements for medical lodging.
  • Licensing Jurisdiction
Lodging establishments in Minnesota are licensed by different agencies. The establishment's location of operation determines which agency is responsible for plan review and licensing.
  • Housing With Services Lodging Exemption (PDF)
Businesses holding a Housing with Services (HWS) registration are exempt from lodging licensure for tenant units or apartments. HWS registration is issued through the Licensing and Certification program of MDH, Health Regulation Division.
