Consultation on Lead in Drinking Water Result Reporting and Model Plan
Lead in drinking water in schools and child cares
2023 Legislation
During the 2023 Legislative session new laws and rules were passed that require public and charter schools and child cares to begin reporting results of lead testing in drinking water to the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). MDH will have to make these results available to the public on our webpage. Part of the rule requires that MDH consult with schools, child cares and other stakeholders about the process for reporting results.
- Legislation for child cares: Chapter 70, Article 4, Sec. 62. [145.9273] Testing for Lead in Drinking Water in Child Care Settings.
- Legislation for public and charter schools: Minnesota Statutes, 121A.335 Lead in School Drinking Water as amended by Chapter 70, Article 4, Section 13.
- A Model Plan for Minnesota’s school and child care facilities describing how schools and child cares conduct testing for lead in drinking water.
Stakeholders
It is important to receive feedback from community stakeholders about how to report results and how MDH makes them accessible. MDH will be conducting outreach and gathering information about results reporting using a variety of tools. MDH hopes that the consultation process will result in a process for result reporting that is easy for schools and child cares to complete as well as allows MDH to present the data in a way that is easy for the public to view and use. Some ways we will conduct outreach and get feedback include:
- Presenting at in person training sessions
- Conducting webinars
- Sending surveys and newsletters
- Maintaining a web presence of outreach activities
Anyone can participate by attending a webinar, receiving updates, or providing feedback using the online form below.
