988 Lifeline Data
The Minnesota Department of Health works with the state's five 988 Minnesota Lifeline centers to collect, track, and analyze 988 Minnesota Lifeline data. The aggregated data includes the number of 988 Minnesota Lifeline contacts, number of contacts that include substance use concerns, number of referrals made to mental health and substance use support, and number of transfers to mobile crisis teams and emergency services. MDH publishes annual data reports that summarize yearly trends.
Important things to know about 988 Lifeline data
Data on the 988 Minnesota Lifeline is obtained through two sources: the national 988 Lifeline administrator Vibrant Emotional Health (Vibrant) and the 988 Minnesota Lifeline Centers. Data variances between Vibrant’s reports and the 988 Minnesota Lifeline Centers’ reports occur due to differences in data systems. Data provided here reflects the 988 Minnesota Lifeline Centers’ data.
The 988 Minnesota Lifeline answers calls, texts, and chats. The following information only includes data on calls because the text and chat data infrastructure is continuing to develop.
There is known data duplication in the current data set. This means the same individual is counted multiple times if they called the 988 Minnesota Lifeline multiple times in 2023. Therefore, the following data represents the number of calls made to the 988 Minnesota Lifeline, not the number of individuals who called.
Contacting the 988 Minnesota Lifeline can be anonymous, and help-seekers are not required to disclose any demographic information to receive support. Therefore, the demographic information reported by 988 Minnesota Lifeline Centers is most likely not an accurate representation of all help-seekers.

In 2023, approximately 68% of callers provided their gender identity. Among those that reported their gender identity, 60% identified as cis women/girls. The vast majority (96%) of callers did not provide their sexual orientation.
In 2023, roughly 47% of callers provided their age. Among those who provided their age, the most common (34%) age group was 25-44 year olds. The large majority (97%) of callers did not provide their race or ethnicity.
