Natural Organic Reduction
Effective July 1, Natural Organic Reduction (NOR) will be a legally recognized method of final disposition in Minnesota. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) is implementing this environmentally sustainable option under the authority of Minnesota Statutes, chapter 149A.
What is Natural Organic Reduction (NOR)?
NOR is a natural, contained process that transforms a deceased human body into soil through accelerated biological decomposition. NOR offers a low-emission, eco-conscious alternative to traditional burial and cremation.
Key requirements for Natural Organic Reduction in Minnesota
Licensing and facility operation
- Facilities must be licensed by MDH to perform NOR services.
- Licenses are valid from July 1 through June 30 annually.
- Facilities must comply with all local and state zoning, environmental, and building code requirements.
- Facilities must be equipped with:
- An approved NOR vessel/system.
- A mechanical device for post-process remains.
- Refrigeration for temporary holding of human remains.
How to apply
License to Operate a Mortuary Science Establishment — Initial application of alkaline hydrolysis, funeral, crematory, or natural organic reduction establishments. This includes a change of establishment ownership.
