Medication Guidelines 2015 (Historical)

In 2002, the Minnesota Legislature asked MDH to led to a collaborative process and publication of the guidelines by four state agenciesāˆ’Minnesota Department of Health, Minnesota Board of Nursing, Minnesota Department of Education, and Minnesota Department of Human Services. In addition, a statewide multidisciplinary work group was established and met regularly to provide direction to and discuss the details of this project. The Minnesota Guidelines offer advice on what ultimately needs to be in place for students to be safe in Minnesota schools. Members of the four state agencies and the state-wide work group brought multiple perspectives to their invaluable contributions to the guidelines’ development and review processes. Thus, the final document does not represent a consensus, but reflects diverse input from a large number of individuals in a variety of agencies and organizations.

The 2015 guidelines are based upon the 2005 guidelines developed and serve as a continual update to the Minnesota Legislature on the study recommendations discussed in the Report to the Minnesota Legislature: Medications dispensed in schools study completed by the Minnesota Department of Health.

Minnesota Guidelines for Medication Administration in Schools (PDF)

In 2024, the 2015 Guidelines were reviewed, and some updates were required due to additions in statute and changes in best practice. To provide better access for use it was determined to take the guidelines out of a 65 page pdf document and convert the guidelines into a series of webpages where the user could more easily search for content. The essence and the purpose of the guidelines remain the same in these webpages as the pdf document. These webpages moving forward will reflect the most current statutes, best practices, and guidelines for medication administration. The pdf document remains for historical purposes through the time of this transition.
