Federal and state training resources
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
The CDC’s EH Workforce Development Training Web page links to training resources for environmental health professionals.
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
The Emergency Management Institute (EMI) offers self-paced courses designed for people who have emergency management responsibilities and the general public. All are offered free-of-charge to those who qualify for enrollment.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
The FDA Office of Regulatory Affairs' on-line University (ORAU) State Training Courses and Training Materials Web page is a clearinghouse where state, local and tribal regulators can go for traditional and new technology training and development. It provides both face-to-face, traditional learning events and distance learning events. Many courses are designed to meet training requirements in FDA’s Voluntary National Retail Food Regulatory Program Standards, Standard No. 2 – Trained Regulatory Staff.
Minnesota Department of Health (MDH)
The State of Minnesota requires a Minnesota Certified Food Protection Manager in most food establishments. Food protection manager certification is administered by MDH. Trainers for initial certification courses register with one or more of the approved exam companies. Trainers for renewal/refresher courses must be approved by MDH. MDH maintains a database of approved course providers. Contact information for approved trainers and a list of courses open to the public is available online.
MN.Train
This single portal tracks your participation in online training from a variety of sources, including CDC and FEMA. MN.Train connects public health professionals to nationwide training opportunities, including many free online courses. Available courses cover food protection, foodborne outbreaks, food safety, swimming pools and more.
University of Minnesota (U of MN) Extension
Extension provides training to the food service industry and consumers to support healthy, sustainable, and safe food.
University of Minnesota School of Public Health
Continuing education at the School of Public Health offers short courses, institutes, professional certification review courses, workshops and conferences with credit and not-for-credit options delivered both on-campus and online.

Minnesota Environmental Health Association (MEHA)
MEHA hosts winter, spring and fall conferences featuring professional development opportunities.
National Environmental Health Association (NEHA)
NEHA e-Learning offers several free online courses as well as credential review programs (i.e., food safety, REHS) for purchase.
