Get started as a resident

If you are a nurse new to public health practice:

  1. Discuss your interest in the PHN residency program with your supervisor.
  2. Work with your supervisor to identify a nurse preceptor within your agency.
    1. An ideal preceptor provides guidance and supervision to promote clinical competence and skill development in the novice public health nurse. Learn more: Preceptor position description.

 

Get started as a public health supervisor

If you are a public health supervisor:

  1. Identify a nurse new to public health practice who might benefit from the PHN residency.
  2. Identify a nurse preceptor within your agency.
    1. An ideal preceptor provides guidance and supervision to promote clinical competence and skill development in the novice public health nurse. Learn more: Preceptor position description.
  3. Connect the nurse new to public health practice with the nurse preceptor and the PHN residency program: PHN Residency Program - MN Dept. of Health (state.mn.us).

 

Get started as a preceptor

  1. If you are an experienced public health nurse, review the preceptor position description and consider becoming a preceptor in your organization.
  2. Talk with a public health supervisor or public health director if you are interested in becoming a preceptor.
