Millions of Ukrainian nationals have fled their country, primarily to neighboring countries, for safety reasons. Refer to Operational Data Portal: Ukraine Refugee Situation for the latest. The U.S. government has committed to admitting displaced Ukrainians to the U.S. through the USCIS: Uniting for Ukraine program, launched on April 21, 2022. As part of this program, U.S. based family members, friends, and community members are able sponsor Ukrainians to come to the U.S. with humanitarian parolee status. Both sponsors and beneficiaries need to meet eligibility criteria to participate in the program.

Other Ukrainians have come through the southern border and have been given humanitarian parolee status. Ukrainians residing in the U.S. may also qualify for USCIS: Temporary Protected Status. We also expect a number of Ukrainians will enter the U.S. as refugees through the Lautenberg program, as referenced at U.S. Department of State: Welcoming Ukrainian Nationals to the United States. The legal pathway through which Ukrainians arrive to the U.S. impacts their eligibility for benefits and the health requirements associated with their immigration.

Brief overview for clinicians caring for Ukrainian new arrivals

The workgroup has produced a brief overview that highlights the cultural and language considerations, potential health concerns, history and content of prior health screenings, and access to health care when they resettle in their final destination.
