What to report: case definition
Invasive E. coli infections are infections that occur outside of the intestine (extraintestinal) and where the bacteria are found in a body site that is normally considered “sterile”* (e.g., blood, cerebral spinal fluid)
- E. coli isolated from a sterile site*
AND- Patient is a Hennepin or Ramsey County Resident of any age
OR - Patient is a Minnesota resident < 90 days of age
- Patient is a Hennepin or Ramsey County Resident of any age
* "Sterile site" definition (from the ABCs Case Report Form)
How to report
- Electronic Laboratory Reporting (ELR)
ELR reporting is preferred from any health system that has a previously established ELR feed with the Minnesota Department of Health, invasive E. coli should be reported via ELR. - Another secure electronic data transmission method.

Isolate submission
- Clinical and reference laboratories are required to submit isolates to the MDH public health laboratory using the General Infectious Disease Laboratory Submission Form from the Forms for the Infectious Disease Laboratory.
- Complete the submitter, patient, and specimens sections, and the source/site information in the reportable disease isolate section.
- In the comment box write: “Specimen receiving staff order Escherichia coli (invasive) – Isolate (ECOLIID).”
- If your laboratory has capacity, please include antimicrobial susceptibility (AST) report printout from your automated system (e.g. Vitek2, Microscan, Phoenix), with the isolate.
- Please contact the MDH-PHL Special Microbiology Laboratory during regular business hours at 651-201-5073 with any questions about isolate submission.
