Haemophilus influenzae (Hi) Neonatal Sepsis Expanded Surveillance (HiNSES)

Haemophilus influenzae (Hi) neonatal sepsis surveillance is being expanded among neonatal, pregnant and post-partum patients effective January 1, 2016.

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has expanded surveillance for Hi neonatal sepsis in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This expanded surveillance includes cases that may not have previously been routinely reported to MDH.

What to report

HiNSES neonatal cases:
  • Infant 0-30 days of age
  • H.influenzae isolated from a normally sterile site
  • Live birth of infant of any gestational age at a hospital from a mother who is a Minnesota resident
HiNSES pregnant and post-partum cases:
  • Invasive H. influenzae cases who are pregnant at the time of case confirmation
  • Invasive H. influenzae cases who delivered a live infant or stillbirth or had an abortion (induced or spontaneous) less than 30 days before case culture
  • Any fetal death associated with H.influenzae isolated from placental or amniotic fluid of mothers who are Minnesota residents (these cases will be considered maternal cases)
  • Stillbirths from mothers who are Minnesota residents with H.influenzae isolate from a normally sterile site (these cases will be considered maternal cases)

Do not report as HiNSES if the culture was collected more than 12 hours after death, or it was a home birth.

How to report HiNSES

Both the HiNSES form and the ABCs Case Report Form should be completed and returned to MDH.

  • ABCs Case Report Form
The ABCs Case Report Form can be used to report this disease.
  • HiNSES Report Form
The HiNSES form is used for reporting Haemophilus influenzae (Hi) Neonatal Sepsis for expanded surveillance to the Minnesota Department of Health.

Submitting clinical materials

For Haemophilus influenzae and Neonatal sepsis, submission of clinical materials (isolate, if available) to MDH is required by rule.

  • Clinical Materials
Clinical materials must be submitted according to these guidelines.
