In 2024, there were 89 confirmed and probable cases reported (1.5 cases per 100,000), representing the highest number of annual cases reported to date in Minnesota, and an increase from the previous record of 73 cases in 2023. Over the past decade, slight annual fluctuations in reported cases have been observed, however, the number of reported cases continues to trend upward. Case demographics have not changed much over time. In 2024, 63 (71%) of the cases occurred in males, and the median case age was 69 years (range, 0 to 95), up slightly from 66 in 2023. This is similar to the median age for anaplasmosis cases (66 years), but considerably older than the median age for Lyme disease cases (55 years). Illness onset dates peaked in the summer months: 64 (72%) of the 89 cases with known onset date reported first experiencing symptoms in June, July, or August. Thirty-seven (42%) of the 89 cases were hospitalized due to their infection, with a median admission duration of three days (range, 1 to 10). Seventeen patients reported severe complications (e.g., organ failure).
