What to report: case definition

Invasive E. coli infections are infections that occur outside of the intestine (extraintestinal) and where the bacteria are found in a body site that is normally considered “sterile”* (e.g., blood, cerebral spinal fluid)

  • E. coli isolated from a sterile site*
    AND
    • Patient is a Hennepin or Ramsey County Resident of any age
      OR
    • Patient is a Minnesota resident < 90 days of age

* "Sterile site" definition (from the ABCs Case Report Form)

How to report

  • Electronic Laboratory Reporting (ELR)
ELR reporting is preferred from any health system that has a previously established ELR feed with the Minnesota Department of Health, invasive E. coli should be reported via ELR.
  • Another secure electronic data transmission method.

Isolate submission

    • Complete the submitter, patient, and specimens sections, and the source/site information in the reportable disease isolate section.
    • In the comment box write: “Specimen receiving staff order Escherichia coli (invasive) – Isolate (ECOLIID).”
    • If your laboratory has capacity, please include antimicrobial susceptibility (AST) report printout from your automated system (e.g. Vitek2, Microscan, Phoenix), with the isolate.

  • Please contact the MDH-PHL Special Microbiology Laboratory during regular business hours at 651-201-5073 with any questions about isolate submission.
