Case definition

  • Any bacterial infection during the first 7 days of life, excluding coagulase-negative Staphylococcus, isolated from a sterile site in infants.

Required disease reporting

  • Reporting Neonatal Sepsis
    The reporting rule require reporting of all bacteria, excluding coagulase-negative Staphylococcus, isolated from a sterile site in infants less than 7 days of age.

    • As part of the disease reporting rule, submission of clinical materials to the MDH Public Health Laboratory will also be required. Please call the MDH Public Health Laboratory at 612-676-5396 if you have any questions about the submission of clinical specimens.

  • If you have any questions concerning neonatal sepsis reporting please call MDH at 651-201-5414.

  • Haemophilus influenzae (Hi) Neonatal Sepsis Expanded Surveillance (HiNSES)
    Surveillance for Haemophilus influenzae (Hi) Neonatal Sepsis is being expanded among neonatal, pregnant and post-partum patients effective January 1, 2016.
