Hearing and Vision Screening

Child and Teen Checkups

Screening is the most practical approach to identify children in need of professional services. Early identification and treatment can prevent or alleviate many of the problems that result from impaired hearing and vision. The MDH hearing and vision screening recommendations are for screening children after the newborn screening period (i.e., 2 months through 20 years).

Refer to either hearing or vision screening below for resources and materials.

Two key resource documents are available to download:

  • Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Guidelines for Hearing Screening After the Newborn Period to Kindergarten Age (PDF)
These guidelines provide tools for health history and hearing screening procedures, including pure tone audiometry, otoacoustic emissions screening, and tympanometry.

  • The Hearing Screening Training Manual (PDF).
Some of the topics addressed in this training manual are as follows:

Overview of hearing and hearing loss
