What do you need to get licensed?
All measurement and mitigation professionals need to:
- Take an approved training course(s) and pass an approved examination(s).
- Use approved testing devices.
- Have a quality assurance (QA) plan.
- Apply and submit a non-refundable license fee.
A mitigation company applying for a license needs to provide proof of workman’s compensation insurance, or a statement that workman’s compensation insurance isn’t required.
- Only placing and retrieving measurement devices: measurement license.
- Installing mitigation systems: mitigation license and a company license, or a sole-proprietor mitigation license.
- Doing mitigation and measurement: mitigation and company license, or a sole-proprietor mitigation license. No need to apply for the measurement license because the mitigation license includes the ability to do measurement.
- Do I need a mitigation company license? Any business or government entity that employs one or more licensed mitigation professional and performs or authorizes employees to perform radon mitigation needs a mitigation company license. A sole proprietor radon mitigation professional, who does not employ or contract with a licensed radon mitigation professional, is not required to obtain a mitigation company license.
If you are a mitigation professional whose company only employs one licensed radon mitigation professional, you have two options:
- Mitigation Professional, Sole-proprietor License: This license will allow you to purchase tags and submit data to MDH. No additional company license is needed. This option does not allow future expansion to add new licensees to the company.
- Mitigation Company License and a Professional License: The mitigation company license is free if the company only has one licensed mitigation professional. The professional will have their license and then use the company to purchase tags.
If you are a mitigation professional who works for a company with more than one licensed mitigation professional, then your company will apply for a radon company license and your professional license will be connected to that company. The company will order tags and submit mitigation data for you.
Please contact us at health.indoorair@state.mn.us if you have questions about what type of license to apply for.
