Who needs to take the lead independent examination?
The following disciplines require successful completion of the Lead Independent Examination:
- Lead Supervisor
- Lead Inspector
- Lead Risk Assessor
You must achieve a score of 70% or better to successfully complete the exam.
The Lead Independent Examination is accessible only online. You can take the Lead Independent Examination at home, at a public library, and even on your smart phone if you choose.
You may take the Lead Independent Examination after you have successfully completed your initial training course.
You may take the Lead Independent Examination immediately after passing your initial training course if you wish. Or you can take a few days to let the information sink in before you take the Lead Independent Examination. It’s up to you.
However, do not take the Lead Independent Examination before you successfully complete your initial training. Your application for a lead credential will be denied if you take the exam prior to successfully completing your initial training course, and you could also be subject to enforcement action.
All you need to take the Lead Independent Examination is internet access.

The examinations are 25 questions long. At the end of the examination you will be told if you passed or failed.

MDH uses the information you provide for this examination to determine if you meet the requirements to take the examination. You are not required to provide the requested information. However, if you do not provide the requested information, you will be unable to take the examination. If you submit false information, MDH may take enforcement action against you. Once you submit your examination answers, all information on the examination becomes public.
