A legacy of care: A public health nurse’s impact and retirement
Family Connects is an evidence-based, universal, short-term home visiting program that offers a nurse home visit to families who have recently had a baby. The visit typically occurs when the baby is 2 to 3 weeks of age with the goal of providing a nursing assessment for mom and baby, relevant teaching, and appropriate referrals to help support families during this pivotal time. Family Connects seeks to identify the family’s strengths and provide resources where needed, recognizing that all families benefit from connection. When surveyed, almost 100% of families would recommend a nurse home visit through the Family Connects program.
Nancy, PHN, nurse home visitor, six years with Family Connects
After 30 years of dedicated service as a public health nurse home visitor, Nancy will retire this fall, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of compassion, knowledge, and genuine adoration for infants and young families across Minnesota.
In her six years as a Family Connects nurse home visitor, Nancy has visited over 850 families in Minneapolis and suburban Hennepin County area. She has brought a wealth of expertise and genuine compassion to each home, supporting new parents with her knowledge of newborn care, breastfeeding, and postpartum recovery. Nancy is highly skilled at navigating available community resources to support the goals of her clients.
Perhaps most meaningful is the impact Nancy has had on the families she has served. One family shared that Nancy “made me feel human and cared for,” which is a simple and yet powerful reflection of the warmth and respect that have been foundational to Nancy’s work throughout her career.
While Nancy is looking forward to retirement, she knows that she will miss the privilege of being welcomed into the homes of new families during such an important time in their lives. For 30 years, she has helped to ensure that parents have the support they need to get off to a good start.
